We have exciting news and excellent progress to report!
Rhode Island Department of Transportation has approved
our grant for the restoration of the Dutch Island Lighthouse, and we
have the green light to proceed into construction. The DILS building
Committee has successfully navigated the arduous contractor procurement

outlined by the
federal and state funding sources. After a formal bid process, including
site visit and design addendum, we received bids from four qualified
contractors.
Based on the Building Committee’s recommendation, the DILS Board awarded the
construction contract to Abcore Restoration Company, Inc. Abcore, a veteran
of both Plum Beach and Rose Island lighthouses, is a local firm with
extensive experience and a solid track record with Newport Collaborative
Architects and the state. We expect Abcore to be on site and under
construction midsummer, with completion of the restoration possible by early
fall.
Starting the construction means that we have to extend out focus to the next
crucial phases of the project: fully funding the restoration, and the |

long-term maintenance of the lighthouse. The
federal/state-sponsored grant covers about 75% of the anticipated
$160,000 (base) restoration cost, as we anticipated. Now, DILS must fund
the balance (currently available from the past kind and generous
donations of DILS members & friends) – and create an endowment for the
permanent maintenance of the lighthouse. The DILS Board researched
comparable lighthouse restoration efforts and established a target for
the Endowment Fund of $200,000.

a fully functioning private aid to navigation. This feature has an
additional cost of about $5,000. What a great opportunity for a caring donor
to make a lasting gift!
Your generous support and patience has made this progress possible and has
brought us all to this important milestone, for which we are most grateful.
Your continued support to help us continue to move forward will be greatly
appreciated.
Most Sincerely,
