ALF Starts Fundraising For Abandoned Dutch Island Lighthouse

The American Lighthouse Foundation has stepped forward again to lead the fight to save a nearly forgotten New England Lighthouse. Located near Jamestown, Rhode Island on Narragansett Bay the small neglected Dutch Island Lighthouse is in near ruins, but members of the American Lighthouse Foundation think they will be able to save it.

Not much remains of the Dutch Island Light Station, which was built in 1926 and automated way back in 1947. Shortly after automation, the keeper’s house, which was once lived in by a keeper who was a

All that remains of the Dutch Island Lighthouse in Rhode Island. It was only several years ago that the roof was still on

the oil house. The American Lighthouse Foundation is now raising funds to save

 this lighthouse.

Revolutionary War veteran, was torn down.

 

In 1962, the Coast Guard deeded the lighthouse grounds, with the exception of the tower and an easement, to the State of Rhode Island for use as a wildlife sanctuary. In 1979 vandals were successful in severely damaging the light in the tower beyond repair and it was never relit.

 

A local chapter of ALF
