lighthouse to assist the
nonprofit group in its fund raising efforts. The donation of the painting
also allows the Friends of Little River Lighthouse the rights to use the
image to sell prints of the painting or to affix the image on other items.
The only stipulation of the donation is that the original painting is to be
framed and on display in the keeper’s house at the Little River Lighthouse
during the seasonal months when the lighthouse is open.
Marilyn Murdock, vice president of the Friends of Little River Lighthouse,
which is a chapter of the nonprofit American Lighthouse Foundation, said the
group is ecstatic over the donation of the painting. She went on to say,
“This is one more example of the community’s support for our efforts to save
and preserve this historic lighthouse.”
Established in 1847, the Little River Lighthouse Station sits on a 15-acre
island in Cutler’s harbor and was deeded to the nonprofit group in 2002
under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. The group,
which has been working on its restoration for the past seven years, hopes to
open the station in the very near future for over night stays.
Prints of the 11” x 14” painting that are ready for matting and suitable for
framing, are available for $12.95 plus 65 cents for Maine sales tax and
$5.00 shipping for a total of $18.60 from Friends of Little River
Lighthouse, P.O. Box 671, East Machias, ME 04630. For those that want to
avoid the shipping charges or pay by credit card they can call lighthouse
volunteers at 259-3638 to make arrangements to pick up a copy at their
office at 985 Cutler Road in Whiting. All proceeds benefit the restoration
of the lighthouse. The Friends group also stated that gift shop orders are
also welcome.
