side. One side features the Cutler
United Methodist Church and the other features the Little River Lighthouse.
Representatives of the church and
the lighthouse said the tote bags were a perfect fit for each other for a
number of reasons. The church, which sits on a hill overlooking Cutler’s
picturesque harbor, has strong ties to the lighthouse since many of the
descendants of former keepers of the U. S. Lighthouse Service attend the
church Also, Terry Rowden, who served at the lighthouse as a Coast Guard
keeper, and his family attend the church.
The church has also allowed the
Friends of Little River Lighthouse, which is a chapter of the American
Lighthouse Foundation, to use the building for a number of events over the
years.
The tote bags were first introduced
to a flotilla that visited the harbor this past August and were extremely
popular with the crews of the vessels. Since then, many of the tote bags
have been sold to local residents, “But we still a few left that would make
great holiday gifts for anyone,” said lighthouse volunteer Karen Staake.
She continued by saying, “The profits from the sale of the tote bags are
divided between the Cutler United Methodist Church and the Friends of Little
River Lighthouse, which are both good causes.”
The tote bags are $20.00 each plus
sales tax and $5.00 for shipping from the Friends of Little River
Lighthouse, P.O. Box 671, East Machias, ME 04630 or they can be picked up in
person in Whiting, ME, by calling ahead of time at 207-259-3833 to make
arrangements.
