Families Drawn to Little River Lighthouse Open House

 

 
 

Visiting a remote island lighthouse way “downeast” in Maine is not just for the lighthouse aficionado, as was evident by the last Open House of the season at Little River Lighthouse this past August 14th.

 

“We had more families visiting the lighthouse than ever before,” said Tim Harrison, chairman of the Little River Lighthouse chapter of the American Lighthouse

Foundation. “We were delighted to see so many children. These are memories these kids will carry with them forever and never forget. Hopefully it will create enough of an interest that some of them will eventually become the next generation of caretakers.”

museum exhibit area, and enjoyed a picnic lunch on the island provided by the lighthouse volunteers.

 

As an extra special bonus, many of them were given a boat ride around the island by local Cutler lobsterman John Drouin so that they could experience firsthand what the mariners would view as they approached the harbor. This enabled them to better understand

 
 

how the lighthouse was used to warn the ships away from the treacherous rocks hidden just below the water’s surface. 

 

As one visitor left the island, he said, “Just think, there are people in Las Vegas today who think they are having a good time.”

 

 

 
 

Little River Lighthouse volunteer Patti Sears said it was the most hot dogs she had ever cooked, but she had fun doing it and can’t wait until the first Open House next year. She said she stopped counting hot dogs when she went over 100

Kelly Anne Loughery and Tim Harrison, chairman of the Friends of Little River Lighthouse, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation. Kelly drove three hours from Canada to attend the event. She is one of Canada’s well known lighthouse historians and supporter of lighthouse preservation.
