ALF Announces 2006 Volunteer Work Dates at
Little River Light Station
Little River Light Station has come a
long way over the past five years as American Lighthouse Foundation
volunteers have worked hard at pulling this gorgeous historic site back
from the brink of being lost forever, to a point where it is nearly
restored to its former glory and ready to welcome the public. The light
station is now about

85% restored;
therefore ALF is going to make a big push in 2006 to complete the project
this year – but we need the volunteer support of our members and friends to
make this goal a reality.
Working at a light station like Little River can be a lot of fun, as you
make new friends and have a memorable time working together to save this
historic lighthouse located in a Downeast environmental paradise. The
experience includes the thrill of embarking each day for the island at the
head of Cutler Harbor by boat, passing the many working lobster and fishing
boats that call the harbor home along your journey. Once at Little River
Island, volunteers begin retracing the steps of the keepers before them as
they walk along a half-mile boardwalk through a wooded forest of pine trees;
eventually arriving at a clearing where the light station is snugly nestled
on its rocky perch – a magical place where land ends and the open blue
expanse of Grand Manan Channel begins.
With the 2006 volunteer work dates announced, please consider lending your
fellow ALF members and friends a much-needed helping hand during

one or more of
the following weekends. Even if you can only make one or two days, your
contribution of time and effort is meaningful and will make a difference
at moving this exciting project that much
closer to
completion!

Once restored, Little River Light Station will serve as a truly unique
educational and environmental experience for young and old alike, as well as
an outdoor living classroom for students studying marine science and Maine’s
precious coastal environment.
Before we arrive at this point though, the light station must have its
plumbing restored. As you can imagine, this will be a costly effort,
especially for an offshore site. If you cannot volunteer your time in 2006
at Little River Light Station but want to help nonetheless, the American
Lighthouse Foundation would be extremely grateful for any financial
contribution you could afford to help the organization pay for the
professional installation of plumbing in the former keeper’s dwelling.
Please consider making a donation today to ALF for Little River Light
Station – just like a volunteer’s time, your generous financial gift will
help move this historic site closer to completion!
