Hal said he is
excited about this year’s projects, especially the upcoming opportunity
later this summer to work with a Boy Scout troop from southern Maine that
will spend a week on the island this August.
Unfortunately, the restoration fund is still short of the necessary money
needed to pay for the various supplies that will be required to complete the
restoration. According to “Mr. Hal,” a lot depends on money, saying, “We are
so close, but yet so far from completing the project. We have some
volunteers lined up to help, but we need additional donations to pay for the
supplies necessary to complete the restoration. It would be a real shame to
come all the way from Alabama again this year and not be able to finish the
final phase of restoration. We want to be able to open the lighthouse next
year for educational purposes. He went on by saying, “I’d love to see school
kids, as well as adults, come out and learn about lighthouses and island
life.”
Hal said they are also looking for good quality furniture to furnish the old
lighthouse keeper’s house as well as people who own boats to help transport
supplies, furniture and volunteer work crews to and from the island. He
ended saying, “We can’t do it alone, after all, this is the people’s
lighthouse.”
If you would like to help “Mr. Hal” to assure that the restoration of the
keeper’s house is completed this summer either as a volunteer or by making a
tax deductible donation, contact Friends of Little River Lighthouse, P.O.
