Owls Head, Maine
If you have walked out to Owls Head Lighthouse, you know firsthand the
natural beauty this unique promontory offers with views of Penobscot Bay and
its entire splendor as far as the eye can see.
Imagine being able to admire this seascape from atop Owls Head Lighthouse
like the lightkeepers of old no doubt did on countless occasions.
Well, now you can!
“Visitors and locals alike are excited about the prospect of climbing the
tower at Owls Head,” said Eric Davis, volunteer coordinator for the
lighthouse.

“The month of July was a trial period where we opened the
lighthouse occasionally, which proved successful volunteer and
enthusiasm wise, and we hope to build on this good start for the rest of
the 2009 summer season.”
Owls Head Lighthouse was built in 1825 and stands 26 feet tall. Its guiding
light shines out over Penobscot Bay from a vantage point 100 feet above sea
level, which offers visitors a commanding view of the surrounding seascapes
and islands.
The Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, a chapter of the American
Lighthouse Foundation (ALF), care for the preservation of Owls Head Light
through a license agreement between the United States Coast Guard and ALF.
