ALF Honors Three FPPL
Volunteers at Awards Dinner

On April 1, 2006 the American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF)
hosted a volunteer awards dinner at Jonathan’s Restaurant in Ogunquit,
Maine, to recognize some of the organization’s most dedicated volunteers
to lighthouse preservation and education. In all, 18 individuals from
nine ALF chapters were honored, receiving the Len Hadley Volunteerism
Award for their commitment to |

volunteer work during the calendar year of 2005.
The Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (FPPL) nominated three of their
finest volunteers in Vince Bailey, Sue Young and Isabel Macomber. Caren
Clark, treasurer for the FPPL, talks about the contributions of these
special individuals, saying, “The three volunteers we honored at the April
1st dinner were instrumental in making our National Lighthouse Day at
Pemaquid a special event in 2005. Of course all three of them are reliable
docents, along with the almost 40 other members of our group that keep the
door to our lighthouse open seven days a week during the tourist season.
However, these three individuals went beyond the norm by spending almost 8
hours at the lighthouse on August 17th.”
Clark went on to comment, “On National Lighthouse Day Vince Bailey monitored
the lighthouse so visitors could climb the tower all day. He also kept the
tower open all day on some rainy Sundays when I could not get there. Sue
Young came up with the idea to make lighthouses out of |

poster paper, add cellophane windows and have children
decorate them and glue them onto rocks. That was a tremendous hit with
the kids and the parents, too. Isabel Macomber donated her time to help
serve lemonade and cookies as well as help the kids with the lighthouse
construction. She also made a map of the coastline and put Velcro
lighthouses on the map to show all five lighthouses that can be seen
from Pemaquid Point. We told lighthouse stories and had rolls of paper
for coloring and drawing. Some of the kids even wrote poems about the
day or thanks to us for celebrating lighthouses. We look forward to

doing something equally fun this year during National Lighthouse Day.”
The Len Hadley Volunteerism Award was named after Len Hadley, one of
the original cofounders of the American Lighthouse Foundation. “Len Hadley
was one of the hardest working volunteers any organization could possibly
have,” said Timothy Harrison, president of the American Lighthouse
Foundation. He went on to say, “When Len passed away in October 2000, the
ALF board of directors decided to name an award after him and what he stood
for.”
