The masonry crews will continue with this aspect of the restoration project
over the next week before moving into the second phase, which consists of
re-grouting the joints with a historically accurate natural mortar and
cleaning / prepping the granite surface of the tower prior to eventually
recoating the lighthouse.
Marty Welt, president of the Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (FPPL), a
chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF), is pleased with both
the operational side of the restoration project, as well as with the
opportunities the effort is presenting his chapter volunteers in regards to
sharing the news about lighthouse preservation in action.
“The FPPL is extremely grateful to ALF for their wonderful support, guidance
and fundraising – they are a true partner in this effort,” said Welt. “
Welt went on to note, “The project is going very well and FPPL is able to
keep the tower open to visitors throughout the work. Visitors are quite
interested in the project and are very happy to see such a historic gem
being restored so that it can continue to be enjoyed by future generations.”
