Pemaquid Point Lighthouse – Restoration Update July 30th

One month into the exterior restoration of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, the project is now poised to enter its final phase.

On July 27, 2007 the crews of J.B. Leslie Masonry Contracting Company finished the tedious process of repointing the 1835 granite beacon in preparation for applying fresh coatings to the

tower’s exterior. The recoating process, which will adhere to historical standards for coatings, is expected to begin during the week of

August 6th.

Three days prior to completing the repointing project, representatives from the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and Building Conservation Associates (BCA) made a site visit to view firsthand the restoration progress to date.

During the July 24th site meeting, the Commission and BCA also reviewed different exterior coating samples prepared by J.B. Leslie Masonry

Company to determine the most appropriate historical coating for Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. The Maine Historic Preservation Commission subsequently approved the use of a Rosendale Natural Cement-Based Plaster, which is used for the repair or replacement of historic renders or stuccos.

The repointing work on the tower was also carried out with historically accurate

materials, as J.B. Leslie Masonry Company utilized a Rosendale Natural Cement-Based mortar mix for the joints between the granite stonework of the lighthouse. Both Rosendale products are manufactured by Edison Coatings, Inc., Plainville, CT.

The Rosendale products are manufactured to authentic masonry materials and standards that were used in the construction of thousands of buildings and structures from 1825 to 1956.

“The fact the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is being restored with the same type of natural cement-based materials utilized during its original

construction is something the general public and American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF), as well as all of our partners in this project, can be quite proud of,” said Bob Trapani, Jr., ALF executive director. “From the quality of workmanship to the choice of historically accurate restoration materials, the effort to
