Pemaquid Point Lighthouse – Restoration Update August 15th

On Monday, August 6, 2007, the final phase of exterior restoration for Pemaquid Point Lighthouse began as masons from J.B. Leslie Masonry Company applied a scratch coat to the sentinel’s rugged granite exterior.

The scratch or base coating, as well as a second coat, consists of a natural cement-based plaster manufactured by Edison Coatings, Inc. The coating is used for the repair or replacement of historic renders or stuccos and was approved for use on Pemaquid Point Lighthouse by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.

Once the two coats of the natural cement-based plaster has been applied, crews will then apply a topcoat consisting of liquid quartz mineral coatings, which is also manufactured by Edison Coatings, Inc.

Jim Leslie, president of J.B. Leslie Masonry Company, informed the American Lighthouse Foundation on Tuesday, August 14th that his crews had completed the process of applying the two coats of the natural cement-based  product on the exterior of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and that they subsequently wrapped the tower in burlap to help facilitate the curing.

The final topcoat is expected to be applied to the surface of the exterior on Thursday, August 16th. “If all goes well, we expect to complete the

restoration of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse by the end of this week, or the first part of next week at the latest,” said Jim Leslie. “It all depends on how cooperative the weather is.”

Marty Welt, president of the Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation), is excited about the fact

that the restoration project is coming down the home stretch. “It is wonderful to see this project nearing completion,” said Welt.

Welt went on to say, “I have kept a few important goals in front of the Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (FPPL) volunteers for the last 3 years as president of the group. These goals include - keeping the tower open for public education and enjoyment, raise money to be able to maintain the structure and restore the tower to ensure it's available for future generations.”

Welt concluded, noting, “It has taken over 3 years of fund raising on a local level, along with a generous grant from the National Trust & Lowe’s,

to gather enough money for FPPL to be able to undertake this restoration with the American Lighthouse Foundation’s (ALF) project leadership. ALF, and specifically the organization’s executive director Bob Trapani, has been a wonderful partner through every phase of the project. So with several years of having this restoration as a goal it is now going to be a reality. It's a great feel of accomplishment for all the volunteers in the FPPL chapter.”
