Perkins Island Light Station
Spring 2006 Update
By Rod and Jane Beaulieu
|
|
| |
|
With the
enthusiastic support of our membership, Friends of Perkins Island Light
has made considerable progress toward preserving and restoring the light
station. This progress has occurred primarily in four areas: (1)
fundraising, (2) preservation, (3) communication with stakeholders, and
(4) long range planning.
The primary
source of our funds has always been individuals and families who have
had some sort of direct contact with Perkins Island and are interested
in becoming contributing members of the Friends of Perkins Island Light
(FPIL). We are always looking to expand this base and have succeeded in
recruiting members from states as far away as |

California, many
of whom have never seen the island.
This past season we expanded our fundraising efforts by holding a yard sale
and a raffle of a painting of the light station. Board members Amber and Bob
Page were instrumental in both efforts. They collected donations for the
yard sale at their home in Brunswick last June, donated the painting, and
sold tickets for the raffle. Curtis Fish, another board member and realtor
in Bath was also instrumental in ticket sales.
Our preservation efforts continued last summer. We once again painted the
light tower and scraped and painted the keeper’s quarters. In |

addition, we finished shingling the roof
of one of the most damaged areas of the keeper’s quarters. We are very
fortunate that the interior of the dwelling shows very little water
damage. With additional effort on the roof and reconstruction of the
front entryway, the structure will be stabilized. We have a consistently
loyal crew of volunteer workers, |

including board
members Bob and Amber Page, Curtis Fish and Curtis Bette-O’Rourke, as well
as members Sharon and Bob Trabona, the Swift family, and Gary Higgenbottom.
FPIL’s communication task has been made more complex by the division of
political authority over the island. Perkins Island is an undeveloped state
park. Responsibility for maintaining the non-optical portions of the tower
was acquired by the American Lighthouse Foundation from the U.S. Coast Guard
prior to the founding of the chapter Friends of Perkins Island Light in
2003.
All of the remaining buildings are considered to be a part of the state park
and are under the control of the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands. |
|
| |
| There are also two campsites on the
island administered by the Maine Island Trails Association. Our efforts
to preserve the keeper’s quarters have been approved by David Souci,
director of the Bureau. Steve Spencer, his representative, has been
essential in that process. Jane and I, chairpersons of FPIL, are also
members of |

the Maine Island
Trails Association and Adopters of the Island. This has kept lines of
communication open.
The FPIL is
beginning to deal with the long-term ramifications of our efforts. A number
of our members have graciously consented to step forward and serve our Board
of Directors. These include Bob and Amber Page, Curtis Betts-O’Rourke,
Curtis Fish, Joyce Lyons and Rod and Jane Beaulieu. This board includes
members with experience in business, non-profits, historical research, and
administration. We will meet and begin refining the plans for the island
here in the spring.
