people in the East
Providence community contacted the American Lighthouse Foundation about the
possibility of having a light put back into the tower. The original light
had been removed a number of years ago by the Coast Guard and another was
placed on an erector-style pole next to the lighthouse.
After years of
meetings and ongoing dialogue between the owner and the American Lighthouse
Foundation, ExxonMobil agreed to lease the historic structure, at no cost,
to the American Lighthouse Foundation for the purpose of restoring the
lighthouse to its original glory.
On December 15,
2004, at a well-attended public meeting that was held in East Providence,
Rhode Island, a new chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, The
Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, was formed for the primary purpose of
restoring and saving the lighthouse for future generations. Also, at that
meeting, ExxonMobil presented the first donation toward the preservation
effort a check for $25,000.
The preservation
of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse will be an ongoing endeavor, and volunteers and
donations are needed to restore and maintain this local and national
historic treasure. The Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse and the American
Lighthouse Foundation are dedicated to ensuring that the restoration occurs
and that the lighthouse is well maintained for generations to come.
