East Providence Waterfront Commission Duck Boat Tour

On October 5, 2005 several members of the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse Ad Hoc Committee were tour guests of the East Providence Waterfront Commission. The Commission sponsored an informational “Splash Duck Boat Tour” of a section of the East Providence waterfront, which has been slated for redevelopment. It was one of those days

which one might consider perfect – a moderate temperature, pleasantly sunny and waters well favored for a boat tour.

Representing the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse and the ExxonMobil lighthouse partnership were: Laura McNamara of FPRL, who happens to also a member of the East Providence Waterfront Commission and the Executive Director of the East Providence Chamber of Commerce. Laura acts as the FPRL liaison, serves as the vice chairperson of the FPRL, and is a vital FPRL committee member. Stan Olson, a member of the FPRL committee and the General Manager of the ExxonMobil East Providence operations, along with his colleague, John Andrade of ExxonMobil attended. Also aboard were other FPRL committee members David Kelleher, Nate Chace, Don Doucette and Nancy Doucette.

Mayor Joseph Larisa of East Providence addressed and welcomed the group to East Providence. Present aboard the “DUCK” vessel were

individuals representing a variety of interests associated with the waterfront development. City planner, Jeanne Boyle, explained in great detail the redevelopment plans. The different site components viewed ranged from the former Ocean State Steel Property in the north along the Seekonk River across from the

Brown University Boat Club to a parcel in the south known as Kettle Point, a remediated petroleum tank farm.  These parcels and others between might be referred to as a working landscape – formerly or presently developed commercial parcels.

Time did not allow navigation to Pomham Rocks Lighthouse as the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse had hoped, however, we were in viewing distance of Pomham Rocks and had a captive audience. The East Providence Waterfront Commission has officially chosen the lighthouse to be part of their logo. We were able to explain our enthusiasm for the restoration and preservation of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse and its strategic proximity to the planned revitalization zone. A restored Pomham Rocks Lighthouse will entice people to the East Providence waterfront. To quote Don Doucette, Chairperson of the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse “It will be a stunner!”

As the exterior restoration of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse reaches its final days during November, the lighthouse grows more striking and has taken on an individual aura of beauty, and like a sturdy bookend, supports the southern end of the proposed revitalized East Providence waterfront. Many chapters are yet to be told as Pomham Rocks Lighthouse continues its mission of “Guiding the Way Along the Bay since 1871”.
