Lighthouse float to receive this year's "Most Colorful Float" award.
Volunteers from
the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse marched alongside the float waving to
the onlookers who, in many cases, were viewing the parade float for the
first time. There was clapping and cheering as the volunteers made their way
along the festive parade route.
Many people
recognized the lighthouse replica because Pomham Rocks Lighthouse can be
easily seen from the Cranston-side of Narragansett Bay, as well as the East
Providence side. Most would agree, of the two, Cranston has the better land
view of the Lighthouse.
“This award
means a great deal for our group which was officially organized close

of direct community contact with our western Narragansett Bay neighbors
and it is apparent that the Gaspee Parade was the perfect tonic toward
this end.”

This year marks
the 237th anniversary when Rhode Island colonists burned the
British schooner, HMS Gaspee in Narragansett Bay. It has become recognized
as the first overt action leading to the American Revolutionary War. The
Gaspee Days Committee has been commemorating this event since 1964. To learn
more about the history of the HMS Gaspee and what it means to Rhode Island,

The Friends of
Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation,
has a busy parade schedule this year. On May 25th, they returned to the
Riverside Memorial Day Parade where the float first debuted in 2008. It has
also been selected to participate in the Bristol 4th of July Parade and the
Eastern States (Big E) Parade on Rhode Island Day in Fall 2009.
