Education Committee Report

The Education Committee met and has laid plans for the 2005-06 school year. The plan is as follows:

1. A one-hour

presentation on Rhode Island lighthouses will be offered to any interested teacher in the public and private schools in East Providence. The presentation will consist of discussions of the various functions of a lighthouse and the differences that make each one

unique. Pictures of each of the 21 lighthouses will be shown and a map game of finding the 21 lighthouses on a Rhode Island map will be done. The program will be presented by David Kelleher.

2. Drawings of Rhode Island lighthouses will be done by Mrs. Boucher

(art teacher), upper elementary classes (grades 4 & 5) at Waddington and Francis School in East Providence. The drawings will be displayed at City Hall and other sites around the city.

3. The second and third grades at the Francis School will become

involved in a team-teaching project during late spring. This project will include materials from the Lighthouse Kit provided by the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse. Students will be learning skills in all academic areas. The team has successfully taught a lighthouse unit separately in the past. Together with the new and exciting materials provide, it will enhance the education of all students involved.

4. A program about lighthouses will be presented to the staff of the

Gordon School, a private school in East Providence, by Mrs. Nancy

Moore. Mrs. Moore has created a collection of books, guides, games and other activities donated by the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse. The teachers will be encouraged to use the materials as they see fit. Mrs. Moore will culminate the program at Gordon with a musical about lighthouses that she will create.

Pedaling (up to) the Lighthouse

For a few weekends in September / October, FPRL members have sat at a display table on the East Bay Bike Path directly across and in full view of

the lighthouse. A table was set up and displayed some of our photographs of the progress of the restoration and albums containing the history of the light. Membership applications were passed out and some donations were obtained. Most importantly, the members were able to talk about our project, with the lighthouse itself there in full view.
