Pomham Rocks Lighthouse…
Pre-Thanksgiving Update
Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse President Don Doucette provided the
following update...

|
| |
|
Hello all,
I called Keith
Lescarbeau yesterday for a brief update of the restoration and to extend
our Thanksgiving salutations to the whole Abcore crew and their
families. Keith returned best wishes to us all, as well.

Besides some odds and ends, the
last major exterior job remaining to be accomplished is the hip
metal roofing replacement. Keith, I think, said approximately five days. He
offered, "we have to pick our days" - meaning the process of being
job selective due to fluctuating seasonal |

weather conditions. The house doors have
been replaced along with new locks. When the exterior work is finished,
the crew will move inside and complete some structural needs (the tower
area). That will take Phase One into December and completion.
One curious
bit of news for our history buffs…Keith removed the old metal roof from
the powerhouse for replacement. He inspected the
one-inch wooden boards underneath and found them sound. He said a number
of the boards had what looked like cement residue on them

suggesting they
had been used for some other construction purpose. This seems typical of old
Yankee tradition, "waste not, want not." Sounds like something my
grandfathers might have done after hearing family stories and personal
observations of their habits.
Now here’s the
rest of the story. One board had a written reference on it suggesting it may
have been from an out building of a Connecticut lighthouse. Hand
written were the words, Old Saybrook Point Lighthouse and just a few
words indicating the plank may have been part of a lighthouse building
there.
We are left to
surmise that perhaps a work crew had labored in Old Saybrook prior to coming
to Pomham to work on the powerhouse. |

They were
thrifty stewards and practiced recycling finding multi-purpose use for
some building materials. Keith photographed the board before putting the
new roofing in place: the plank being sound as previously
stated, remains a vital part of the structure. Yankee thrift prevails. |
