Pomham Rocks Lighthouse

Begins its “Step Back In Time”

The Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse board members were provided the opportunity to journey out to Pomham Rocks Light on Wednesday, August 10th to see firsthand the progress being made by Abcore Restoration Company. Keith Lescarbeau, President and owner of Abcore, personally

escorted the board members around the historic site, showing them his many architectural findings on the exterior and suggesting recommendations that would both preserve and highlight the structure’s historic, character-defining features.

Friends of Pomham Rocks Chairman Don Doucette expressed his feelings following the site visit, saying, “The Committee was astounded and pleased with the quality of work, progress and integrity of Keith Lescarbeau and his crew. Good things are happening.” Barring any

setbacks from Mother Nature, Abcore Restoration Company expects to finish Phase One of the project by December 2005. The completion of Phase One will ensure the stabilization of the historic structure and enable the navigational light from the adjacent steel skeleton tower to be placed back in the lighthouse. This

exciting achievement will yield both a physical and symbolic victory for the lighthouse, as a beam of light will once again shine forth from the sentinel, and serve as an inspiration to carry through on our collective mission to save and preserve Pomham Rocks Light for future generations – something we can all be excited about!

Lescarbeau described the progress made at the site over the last month, saying, “Within the first two weeks, we have mobilized and made landing provisions. On site we have a 40-foot storage container, 30-yard dumpster, 60-foot man lift, dump trailer, small barge and one work skiff. We have also installed 40 linear feet of floating dock, a 20-foot ramp and a one-ton hoist and gantry.”

In providing an overview of the actual restoration progress, Lescarbeau stated, “Work over the last two weeks has included – but has not been

limited to, complete removal of the overlay wood shingles, which were covering the original siding. We have custom fabricated enough siding matching the original for necessary repairs. Sufficient stock for window and door casings, base boards and corner boards has been ripped and primed. The tower has been shingled complete

with course layout such that it will coincide with the mansard slate courses in order for the steep slope of the mansard to match the vertical undefined slope of the tower.”

Lescarbeau went on to say, “One side of the original siding has been removed and has had its paint stripped and oil primed and is ready for reinstallation. Paint removal on the sound trim to remain has begun, along with preparation on the exterior of the lantern room. The tower itself, which had about a 7 degree pitch, has been jacked and secured to a plumb position (note: this had to be done before re-shingling).”

In addition to the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse board members touring the site and seeing the progress on the lighthouse, Abcore Restoration Company will also be scheduling site visits for the Rhode

Island Historic Commission and Providence Preservation Society. “They (State Historic Preservation Office) periodically visit my projects,” says Lescarbeau. “I believe it is important that we have their blessing on this project. With the passing of each coming month, Abcore Restoration Company, under the guidance of the

partnership between ExxonMobil, the American Lighthouse Foundation and its chapter – the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, is transporting the lighthouse “back in time” to its former glory as a shining beacon along the Providence River. Thanks to the passion and dedication of lighthouse preservationists, the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse has a gleaming future!
