in Rockland,
Maine, were honored by ALF with the presentation of the national
organization’s ‘Len Hadley Volunteerism Award’ for their selfless efforts in
2007.
The volunteer
awards were presented to Mills and Marshall at the 1878 lighthouse site by
FPHL co-chairman Jeremy D’Entremont and ALF executive director Bob Trapani,
Jr.
In all, the American Lighthouse Foundation, steward of 21 historic lights
throughout New England and managing partner of the Maine Lighthouse Museum,
recognized a total of 17 outstanding volunteers from the ranks of

the organization’s twelve chapters in
late 2007, with Mills and Marshall being an integral part of the honoree
list.
“In her quiet way, Sharon Mills has been one of our most important
volunteers for a few years now,” said FPHL co-chair Jeremy D’Entremont.
“She's helped at most of our open houses and other events. As the
"keeper" of our merchandise and literature table at open houses, she's
the first person a lot of visitors get to meet and she's knowledgeable
enough to handle tough questions and always presents a friendly face.”
D’Entremont went on to note, “Sharon is also our chapter’s secretary and
performs the |
|
|
| |
important job of
recording the minutes at our board meetings. One thing people might not know
about Sharon is that she's traveled widely with her husband, Bob, to
lighthouses around the U.S. and outside the country. She's photographed more
than 1000 lighthouses, a feat that's been matched by very few people, if
any.”
In talking about
the volunteer contributions of William Marshall, D’Entremont said, “William
is our fundraising/events co-chair and now also our membership chair. He has
truly gone ‘above and beyond’ as a |
|
| |
tireless volunteer in recent years.
He also did a tremendous amount of work to make our first art show
possible last August and helped at almost every open house and most of
our other events.”
D’Entremont went on to say, “At open houses, you're likely to find him
talking to visitors in the watchroom or in the lantern room, telling
visitors about the Fresnel lens or past keepers of Portsmouth Harbor
Light. He enjoys handyman-type projects and has pitched in with painting
and repairs as needed. He's almost single-handedly decorated the
lighthouse during the Christmas season for the past couple of years.

an accomplished
photographer and artist and has had paintings exhibited in local galleries.
D’Entremont
concluded, “It takes many volunteers with a variety of skills for a group
like ours to be successful, but there's always a core group of volunteers
who do the lion's share of the work. We're very lucky to have Sharon and
William as vital members of our core group.”
