Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse Share

One of the rewards of lighthouse
preservation is being able to share our projects with the local
communities. In doing so, the education process from both a learning and
awareness perspective creates a greater appreciation and value for the
project within the community. This in
turn can have a very |

positive impact on stimulating new volunteer interest, as well as
cultivating new members and donors to the
lighthouse preservation effort. The Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse
(FPHL), a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, understands the
value of reaching out to the local community through education and has
consistently demonstrated its commitment to do so as they work to preserve
Portsmouth Harbor Light for future generations.
The FPHL’s latest educational outreach
occurred at the New Castle Library on September 28, 2005 where chapter
president Jeremy D’Entremont, assisted by vice-president Joanne Yeaton and
secretary Sharon Mills, presented a PowerPoint program on the history of the
Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse.

group's efforts. It's very
important to us that we involve the people of New Castle and the
surrounding towns in our activities and plans, since Portsmouth Harbor
Lighthouse is one of the town's most historic structures and a
picturesque icon of the area. I was pleased that a number of New
Castle residents came to our presentation.

In my presentation, I simply wanted to convey
the fact that Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse has a long, tremendously rich
history reaching back to 1771. It was the first lighthouse established
north of Boston in the colonies, and one of the original 11 light stations
in the colonies before the American Revolution. This serves as a reminder
of the vital importance of Portsmouth as a port for shipbuilding and trade
in that era. The lighthouse also had a succession of colorful keepers,
including Joshua Card, who served to the age of 87, and Elson and Connie
Small, who left in 1948. That's when the Coast Guard made the site the new
Portsmouth Harbor Lifeboat Station, now Coast Guard Station Portsmouth
Harbor.
I also wanted to let the audience know about
some of our future plans, such as the rebuilding of the wooden walkway to
the lighthouse. Projects like this can only become reality through the
financial support of the surrounding communities.
I was very pleased that Bob Trapani,
executive director of the American Lighthouse Foundation, our
parent organization, was able to speak at |

this event to give people an idea of the
broader scope of lighthouse preservation. Bob's passion for this
subject surely made an impression on the audience.
Through this and other events in the
local area, I hope we'll see more of the lighthouse's neighbors involved
in Friends of Portsmouth Harbor

undoubtedly one of the prettiest
little towns in New Hampshire, and my hope is that its citizens will want to
do their part to help preserve the things that make it special. The
lighthouse is certainly one of those things.”
