Three FPHL Volunteers Honored at 2008 ALF Awards Dinner

The American Lighthouse Foundation honored 19 outstanding volunteers on November 22, 2008 during the 2008 Lighthouse Gala & Volunteer Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Newport, RI.

The 19 volunteers, who included two members of the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, received ALF’s prestigious “Len Hadley Volunteerism Award” during the third annual volunteer dinner.

took turns speaking about FPHL volunteers Joanne Yeaton and Jackie Maurice (who both were unable to attend the awards dinner) and sharing with the audience why the two women were very deserving of ALF “Len Hadley Volunteerism Award.”

Remarks made by Jeremy D’Entremont & Ross Tracy during the awards dinner:

our open houses, cruises, and special events. Despite a busy work schedule, along with her role as a musician with the Seacoast Wind Ensemble, Joanne is usually one of the first to arrive at the open houses.

Joanne is a charter member of the chapter when it was formed in

2001, and some of the early board meetings were held at her home. In 2005, she said the following:

‘I love the lighthouse at Fort Constitution in New Castle. I was born and raised in Portsmouth, and as a young girl, I rode my bicycle past the fort and always gazed at the lighthouse. What a beautiful sight – a white lighthouse with black trim standing so stately against the blue water and blue sky.’

‘After living in other parts of the country, I returned to New Hampshire in 1998. Family ties were always on the New Hampshire seacoast, so I returned many times before actually moving back to the coast. I then read a newspaper article asking people to attend a meeting and form a chapter if they liked lighthouses. I thought that sounded good to me. My favorite events are the tours. It is such a pleasure to be at the water’s edge standing beside this beautiful beacon in New Castle. It is a great way to spend an afternoon – and I love it!’”

Jackie Maurice“For the past couple of years, Jackie Maurice has gone above and beyond the call of duty as a volunteer. She’s helped at

most of our open houses, cruises, and other events, as well as at occasional school group tours.

She’s one of a small number of volunteers who take on a more visible role at our open houses; she’s frequently stationed in the watchroom, where she tells visitors about some

of the past keepers of Portsmouth Harbor Light.

Jackie also helped paint the walkway at the lighthouse. She and her husband, Ken, are always willing to lend a cheerful and helpful hand, whenever needed.”
