ALF affiliate, the
Isles of Shoals Steamship Company and the Atlantic News newspaper for their
efforts in restoring the state’s lights, saving their history and promoting
lighthouses to the public.
According to the
Portsmouth Herald, “With the wind-whipped ocean and the Portsmouth
Harbor Lighthouse behind them, those presenting and the six receiving the
awards spoke of the importance of protecting and preserving historic
lighthouses during a week meant to recognize the history behind the
structures.”
Joel Sherburne
noted, “Every year this gets just a little bit bigger and a little bit
better.”
New Hampshire
State Senator Jackie Cilley was in attendance and read a proclamation from
Governor John Lynch that stated the purpose of New Hampshire Lighthouse Week
and how the event supports tourism and raises public awareness for the
historic character of the lights. The Governor’s proclamation also praised
the participants.
A Portsmouth
Herald editorial in the aftermath of New Hampshire Lighthouse Week
noted, “What shouldn’t be forgotten is the passionate dedication of those
who volunteer time and money to preserve these landmarks. Which is why we
applaud those who were honored last week with awards for their efforts to
promote and preserve lighthouses like those in Portsmouth Harbor and the
fragile White Island Lighthouse on the Isles of Shoals.”
