annual Keeper’s Orientation, which educates and acquaints both longstanding and prospective keepers on the operations, equipment and safety practices, as well as National Park Service policies, as they relate to the management of the overnight stays program at Race Point Light Station.

Cape Cod Chapter member Debbie Jenkins penned two wonderful tributes to the Walkers in honor of their “Ten-Year Achievement Awards,” which were read to over 50 volunteers in attendance at the orientation. The text of the tributes to Jim and Sylvia appear below.

Award speech honoring Jim Walker, Cape Cod Chapter President (read by Bill Jenkins):

Race Point Lighthouse. Ten years ago, the Keeper's House was closed tight, its' windows boarded up. Then someone had a vision: Could Race Point Lighthouse be revived? Could this special place be open again, but this time, for everyone to enjoy?

It could. Jim Walker spearheaded an effort that was nothing short of spectacular. Slowly, step by painstaking step, Jim Walker and his

volunteers breathed life into the entire compound: Race Point Lighthouse, Race Point Keeper's House, the Whistle House - even the Oil House were painstakingly restored. In the spring of 1996, the Keeper's House welcomed Race Point's very first overnight guests, complete with a Keeper Family to oversee their comfort and safety.

The vision - Jim's vision - had become a remarkable accomplishment. Today, thousands of visitors and guests experience the miracle that is Race Point Lighthouse. So, today, we stand to honor the man who started - and finished - all of this. Jim Walker.

On behalf of the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, we present James A. Walker with a Ten Year Achievement Award (at this time the plaque's engraving was read).

Award speech honoring Sylvia Walker, Cape Cod Chapter member (read by Debbie Jenkins):

We're all familiar with the saying, "Behind every great man....". I'd like to say now that, "Beside every great man stands a great woman: one who shares the love, enthusiasm, and generosity of time and effort needed to make such a demanding and worthwhile project come to fruition. So today, we also honor you, Sylvia Walker, with this Ten Year Achievement Award, to say thank you for giving your heart to Race Point Lighthouse. (At this time the plaque's engraving was read.)
