Race Point Lighthouse Introduces Reverse
Osmosis Water Systems
By the Cape Cod Chapter

On February
28, 2008, Jim Walker, president of the Cape Cod Chapter of the American
Lighthouse Foundation, and Race Point Lighthouse volunteer Bill Jenkins,
completed the installation process for two reverse osmosis drinking
water systems for the keeper’s house and whistle house at historic Race
Point Light Station.

to Taccommodate overnight guests, now feature reverse osmosis (R.O.) water
filtration systems. With solar and wind power already in use on the
property, the R.O. systems complete a comprehensive renewable energy plan
for both buildings.
“We wanted to bring fresh water back to our properties,” said Jim Walker.
“Our original plan was to hook up fresh water from the underground water
lines already in place.” The lines were used up until 1972 when the Coast
Guard closed the manned station at Race Point.
Unfortunately, the Cape Cod Chapter found the permit process necessary for
reopening the lines to be formidable, and eventually unattainable. |

That’s when
Jim Walker and Bill Jenkins came up with the idea of installing an R.O.
system. Overnight guests had previously been responsible for bringing
their own drinking water for their stay at Race Point.

bottled water for
their stay,” said Jenkins. “It was easy to install, and required no special
plumbing.”
With the new systems in place, fresh water is once again available at the
keeper’s house and whistle house. Reverse osmosis provides ultra-clean water
that is 99% free of unwanted substances commonly found in tap and well
water. Filter changes are easy, and the systems are maintenance-free.
“It was exciting to find a way to provide clean, safe drinking water on
site,” said Jenkins. “By eliminating the disposal of guest’s plastic
bottles, reverse osmosis is yet another way we can help the environment.”
