Thousands of visitors walk the one-mile granite breakwater each year to get
a close-up view of the majestic beacon that guides and protects mariners and
welcomes all to Rockland Harbor.
The lighthouse and keeper’s dwelling is a piece of American history that is
irreplaceable.
It is unfathomable that anyone could carry out such a senseless act against
a historic property – scrawling initials and lewd remarks across nearly
every side of the structure.
The Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic
Places. Although no property, great or small, should be the target of
vandalism, there should be a special reverence for certain properties.
It is disheartening to know there are people among us who have no respect
for our community.
On the bright side, the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse restored
the beacon’s glow with fresh paint, a splash of paint thinner, plenty of
elbow grease and tender loving care over the weekend.
We wish to thank these folks for their time and commitment to caring for
Rockland’s gem.
Fortunately, the defacing of the lighthouse was repairable, but at a cost.
Not only did it cost the caretakers of the light – the Friends of Rockland
Breakwater Lighthouse – and take time, energy and materials to repair the
damage, it also reflected poorly on the image of Midcoast Maine.
