Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse Railing Replacement Project

By Ted Panayotoff

In November 2007, a major project was undertaken to replace the entire lower railing at the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse.  A matching grant to fund this project was previously received by the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse and plans subsequently moved forward to carry out the

project following research that identified the best and most historically accurate approach to replace the existing railing, which had been installed by the U.S. Coast Guard around the 1950’s.  This railing was in a state of advanced deterioration and was becoming unsafe.

The Friends of Rockland Breakwater had been making temporary repairs to keep the railing intact so visitors could safely access the lighthouse over the past couple of years; however, after the severe April 2007 storm damaged the railing further, complete replacement became a priority.

The approach selected by the Friends and the project contractor, Rockport Steel, of Rockport, ME, was to use a railing design consistent with

architectural practices of the very early 1900’s but using state of the art materials to reduce maintenance requirements and prolong the life of the new railing.

The design of the new railing follows exactly the spacing of the original railing and captures the look of the lighthouse in 1902 far

The railing replacement project was nearly completed by the end of December 2007 but winter weather conditions, especially the cold temperatures that are adverse to such work, forced Rockport Steel to postpone the final aspects of the project until spring 2008.
