Community Connects with

 the Past & Present of

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

By Bob Trapani, Jr.

Lighthouse history can be fascinating but what is just as exciting is when people have the opportunity to learn that we’re still making lighthouse history in the present, especially when this history is happening everyday within their own community.

"Keeper" Ted Panayotoff presented

 "The Lighthouse at Rockland Breakwater"

Breakwater Lighthouse presented a lecture at the Maine Lighthouse Museum entitled “The Lighthouse at Rockland Breakwater.” The 72 people in attendance listened and learned as Panayotoff took them on a journey back in time over a century ago to when the long granite breakwater and the lighthouse were originally built.

With each passing minute the audience was mentally leaping through decades of rich history that touched on the importance of keeping a good light, how the lighthouse played a role in safeguarding Rockland’s maritime interests, and even its shrouded role in the two World Wars as a lookout site for coastal defenses.

By lecture’s end the audience became well acquainted with the fact that Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse is alive with critical restoration activity

Ted Panayotoff highlighted the past and

 present history of the lighthouse

and is open to the general public for education thanks to the passionate efforts of the Friends of Rockland Breakwater, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation.

“People from Rockland look out and see the lighthouse everyday or visit it in the summer,” says

Panayotoff, “but a lot of folks do not know about its history or the efforts to save the lighthouse. This lecture was an opportunity to tell them about why the lighthouse was built and the people who manned it, but it also was a chance to get folks interested in the lighthouse and support what the Friends of Rockland Breakwater is doing. This is “their” lighthouse and we encourage them to become involved.”

In the end community residents and visitors alike walked away from the lecture having learned that as much as things change in life, some things remain the same. Since it was first built in 1902 the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse required keepers who were dedicated to keeping a good light shining at all times. Today the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse are the sentinel’s new keepers of light. Their duty, which is a labor of love, remains unchanged with the passage of time in that they, like the keepers of a bygone era, continue to work hard so that the light people see glimmering across Rockland Harbor remains standing tall and shining bright for future generations.
