U.S. Coast Guard Lends Volunteer “Elbow Grease” to Help Remove Graffiti at Lighthouse

One thing is quite clear – residents of the City of Rockland love their lighthouse with a passion!

In the wake of the horrible news about the vandalism that occurred at Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse in late August 2007, the outpouring of community response and the sheer numbers of people who stepped forward offering to help

remove the graffiti from the historic site was simply incredible.

One of the first calls that Dot Black, chairperson for the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, received after the news of the vandalism went public in the Village Soup was from the United States Coast Guard.

Volunteers gave up their Saturday morning

to lend a helping hand to the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

Chief John Anders, each based in Rockland, volunteered on August 25th to help the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse restore the dignity of the 1902 harbor landmark.

The crew of volunteer Coasties assembled at the public dock in Rockland on a beautiful Saturday morning and was transported to the lighthouse by Two Toots,

a local water taxi service, while another group of Coastguardsmen walked out the 7/8 mile-long breakwater to the light.

In a matter of three hours with the use of a lot of elbow grease and dogged determination, the U.S. Coast Guard volunteers and members of the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse successfully removed the gold spray paint graffiti from the structure’s custom wood shutters and brickwork.

Dot Black recalls the uplifting moment when she heard from the Coast Guard, saying, “The most important phone calls I received was when I

learned that the Coast Guard had put together a volunteer group for Saturday morning (the 25th) to go out to the lighthouse and remove the paint from the shutters and bricks, and the Trapani family, who is always there for me. They jumped right in to say they would be there to help.”

Black went on to say, “Watching all the volunteers step forward

and work together made me think that it was very important to restore such a great landmark. The Coast Guard really has a very special meaning to me – they have been awesome to me and I love everyone of them.”

The team effort to restore the dignity to Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse resonated throughout the community via word of mouth and local newspapers, showing once again Rockland’s passion for their lighthouse and the United States Coast Guard’s commitment to helping make the local community a better place wherever possible.
