Friends of Rockland Breakwater

 Honor Volunteers

By Bob Trapani, Jr.

The Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse work hard all summer long to make sure the 1902 Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, which beckons visitors to take a closer look from the end of a long breakwater, can be open to the general public on weekends for educational tours.

Many people who walk inside the historic beacon often think that the docents on hand to greet them are compensated for their time. Visitors are quite surprised when they learn that the public’s ability to experience and enjoy Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse is only made possible thanks to a small band of volunteers who believe in what they do.

Volunteering can often seem fun when the opportunity “fits” in our schedule, but when a group like the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse make a commitment to the public that the light will be open on a consistent basis week after week, suddenly such situations take on a whole new level of responsibility that volunteers must be dedicated to making happen.

To make matters even more challenging, in what seems like a universal nonprofit dilemma, the pool of volunteers to help with projects such as Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse is always on the shorthanded side. In the end what this translates into is that fewer individuals are asked to shoulder more responsibility and give more of their “free” time.

Thankfully the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, have a core group that does just that – give selflessly of themselves to preserve, interpret and care for one of the City of Rockland’s most cherished historic treasures.

On October 14, 2007, the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse gathered together to recognize a few of their finest volunteers at a year-

end party. Keith Siegel and Tricia Dixon were honored with certificates of appreciation, and more importantly, received the verbal admiration of their fellow peers for “going above and beyond” all summer long while volunteering at Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse.

“I must tell you that volunteering at the lighthouse is truly a pleasure,” said Keith Siegel.  “My daughter

Rachel and I have really enjoyed working out at the lighthouse and getting to know everybody involved in this great group.  I spent my childhood walking out to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, wishing I could see what it was like inside.  It is such a thrill to be able to play a small part in its restoration. I am very honored, and look forward to working with you all next season."

Volunteering at Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse isn’t just for adults. A group of young people also lent a much-appreciated helping hand at the lighthouse in 2007, shouldering as much responsibility in many cases, as their adult counterparts.

Therefore the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse (FORB) made it a special point to also recognize the youth who helped to “keep the light shining” at Rockland Breakwater this year.

“We rely heavily on these young people to help us at our open houses,” said Dot Black, Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse chairperson.

“Chris Gamage, Rachel Siegel, and Shelby Thomas were recognized for volunteering regularly throughout the year, while Katrina Trapani and Dominic Trapani were also mentioned for helping out when their parents brought them out while they were helping out.”

Black went on to say, “Nina Trapani was our top volunteer in our young people category,

as she was always willing to work both at open houses and at our table at the Lobster Festival. We certainly appreciate them all, and are extremely pleased that they are willing to help preserve a part of history at our lighthouse.”
