Labor of Love Lights Wood Island
By Margo Alley

This picture was sent to The Pool Review by Sean Murphy,
who graciously shares many of his photographs of the island with our
paper. Sensing there had to be an adventurous story to getting this
awesome task accomplished, I asked Sean to enlighten me a bit more about
it.

“I
am not sure which challenge was the most difficult,” Sean said, “dealing
with a frozen paddle while kayaking with a load of Christmas lights in below
freezing weather, or strategically trying to get fragile glass bulbs to live
in harmony with a big rock tower subject to high winds! As for the frozen
paddle, cracking it against the bow of the kayak greatly lightened its
weight. As for the fragile glass/ rock tower conflict, the strings of
lights are actually a couple of feet from the tower. I lowered them down
and anchored them to the lawn.”
Sean’s adventure was truly a labor of love, he purchased the lights himself,
and the cost of running them throughout the holiday season will |

be less than the monthly electricity minimum that is paid
by GOMOOS, meaning absolutely no donated funds will be used for any
part of this holiday lighting adventure.
This was the first time the tower has been lit for the
holidays, and something Sean had dreamed of doing for quite some time.
“The seas were particularly calm that day and I had a few
hours to spare, so I made a quick run to the store and purchased the
lights” Sean told us. Amazingly, Sean accomplished the lighting
adventure on his own with no help at all.

Sean has a deep passion for Wood Island and works tirelessly and selflessly
for its cause. “Every time I come home to Hills Beach, the Lighthouse is
there to give me a wink” he said.
Let’s hope the holiday lighting may be the beginning of a long tradition!
