The Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse and Their Summer Fundraiser The Haunting Event

After two successful summers of offering “Fresh Paint Day,” the Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse came up with another unique fundraiser for the summer of 2006.  Fresh Paint Day was a wonderfully fun event where artists came to paint in the area of Biddeford Pool and Wood Island, and then their work is auctioned off at an evening party. the proceeds went to the artist and half to FOWIL. It was a hard act to follow.

This summer’s event called the “Haunting Event,” was inspired by the New England Ghost Project’s investigation of the island and the lighthouse in the Fall of 2005. NEGP, out of Dracut Massachusetts, uses scientific techniques to investigate for paranormal activity and well -  ghosts.

FOWIL’s Haunting event was sold out weeks before the event on July 29th. One hundred and sixteen guest purchased tickets for $50 each to attend the event. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal served in the old

firebarn which had been beautifully decorated with a spooky theme. Before that, trips around the haunted island were offered aboard Light Runner, the boat which FOWIL owns to ferry visitors on guided tours of the lighthouse over the summer. A guided walk through the beautiful village of

Biddeford Pool out to East Point, which offers the closest view of the lighthouse from the mainland, was also available. Then, in the gorgeous old Union Church, the NEGP gave a presentation about their work and what they found on Wood Island.  Ron Kolek, leader of the NEGP and well known radio personality along with Medium Maureen Wood informed the crowd about the various kinds of hauntings and how contact is made with spirits of the departed. It was really exciting to see their photographs of  ghosts --  especially the one which they captured in the basement of Wood Island Lighthouse.

FOWIL, an especially hard working group, raised $5000 at Haunting Event all of which will go toward the restoration effort. The success of this event is due in great part to the generosity of  NEGP and the 20 volunteers who worked to make the evening a great event. Coverage is available on the FOWIL website under the Events link. www.woodislandlighthouse.org
