Of the three pillars of lighthouse preservation –
restoration, education and fundraising, educating the present generation on
the value of lighthouse preservation and cultivating future keepers of the
lights amongst our youth is quite possibly the most daunting challenge of
all. Education doesn’t simply mean facilitating learning programs about
lighthouses and preservation or being “seen” at community events, it also
includes “telling our lighthouse story” time and again throughout every
aspect of the organization’s outreach. By doing so, we dramatically increase
the success of our critical monies to fund lighthouse restoration.
The American Lighthouse Foundation is focusing on these
diverse aspects of lighthouse education by creating initiatives that
address:
♦ Community education and outreach that
impacts the coastal regions where lighthouses reside and are deemed
important to the heritage of community
♦ Lighthouse tours
that make available these historic treasures for public visitation and
one-of-a-kind learning experiences
♦
“Kids on the Beam”
publication that integrates lighthouses within student curriculum so that
our youth of today gain an understanding and appreciation of our lighthouse
heritage and eventually become involved in the preservation of these
historic icons
♦ Museum of
Lighthouse History
that makes learning about lighthouses both fascinating and fun for the
entire family
♦ The American
Lighthouse Foundation’s newsletter
Tower
Notes and the organization’s web site are tools that provide in-depth and
timely insights to the challenges, successes and opportunities that
participation in lighthouse preservation affords
By standing on the
principals of education, together we ensure that the community’s investment
in lighthouse preservation will only grow stronger and more meaningful as
the future continues to unfold before us. Join the American Lighthouse
Foundation as a supporter of this all-important endeavor to teach others
what we already have come to learn and cherish – that being the rewards of
“keeping the lights shining” now and always!
