Join us for a fun weekend of events in historic Portsmouth, New Hampshire!

 

The Friday and Saturday evening events will be held at the Portsmouth Elks Lodge, a beautiful facility located on scenic Sagamore Creek. The Elks Lodge is 10 minutes from Route 95, and 10 minutes from the Comfort Inn in Portsmouth, where a block of rooms have been reserved for the event.

Lighthouse Trivia Challenge & Light Buffet Dinner

Location: Portsmouth Elks Lodge, 500 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, NH.

The main event this evening will be ALF’s first “Lighthouse Trivia Challenge.” This will be a Jeopardy-style competition, complete with

buzzers and sound effects. The winners of the early games will compete in a final round for a grand prize. When you purchase tickets, let us know if you’d like to put your name in as a contestant. Contestants will be chosen at random from the entered names.

Lighthouse Cruise aboard M/V Thomas Laighton

Lighthouse cruise from Portsmouth aboard the Thomas Laighton, sponsored by the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company. This cruise will leave from the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company dock at 315 Market

During the cruise you will see Portsmouth Harbor and White

Island in New Hampshire, and Whaleback, Boon Island, and Cape Neddick (“Nubble”) in Maine.

Street in Portsmouth, across from the Sheraton Harborside Hotel. The M/V Thomas Laighton is a 90-foot vessel with three decks, two fully heated and enclosed cabins, and an open sundeck with seating.

 

The cruise will pass close to the following lighthouses: Portsmouth Harbor and White Island in New Hampshire, and Whaleback, Boon Island, and Cape Neddick (“Nubble”) in Maine. We’ll also enjoy the fascinating Isles of Shoals and other historic sites near Portsmouth. The cruise will be narrated by lighthouse historian Jeremy D’Entremont along with a local history expert from the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company.

 

There will also be raffles on board.

 

 
 

A box lunch is available, including choice of sandwich on a freshly baked bulkie roll: roast beef, sliced turkey, ham & swiss, Italian, or veggie wrap. Served with pasta salad, potato chips, and a large cookie. Choice of soda, bottled water, coffee, or tea.

 

The Laighton also has a galley bar that includes hot dogs, chili, chowder, sub sandwiches, candy, chips, drinks, and alcoholic drinks for those 21 and over. No alcohol or glass products are allowed on board due to Coast Guard regulations.

 

There is convenient parking at the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company for $4.00. You can also park at the Hanover Street parking garage just a few blocks away for $.75 per hour.

The featured speaker at the dinner will be Chris Mills, author, former lighthouse keeper, and preservationist from Nova Scotia. Chris served as a keeper for the Canadian Coast Guard on both the Atlantic and Pacific

coasts. He is the author of the acclaimed book Vanishing Lights and his latest book, Lighthouse Legacies, which tells the story of how lighthouse keepers and their families lived until the 1960s: without electricity, exposed to the fury of the sea, and always at the service of the mariner.

 

Chris is a founding member of the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society and editor of the organization’s newsletter, The Lightkeeper. He

 
 

 has also worked as a broadcast journalist. Chris’s multimedia presentation will be based on his lightkeeping experience, with excerpts from the many interviews he’s conducted.

 

The evening will also include a presentation on the latest preservation efforts of ALF and its chapters. Seating limited to 180 people. Tickets $45 for adults, $35 for children 12 and under.

Sunday, May 18

10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, located off Route 1B in New Castle, New Hampshire, will be open for tours to attendees of the ALF events, free of charge. The open house will be hosted by volunteers of the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, a chapter of ALF.

 

SPECIAL OFFER TO ALF MEMBERS: If you’re a current member, you can buy a combined adult ticket for all of the weekend events for $110, a savings of $15! A combined children’s ticket for all three events is $99. (Add $12 to ticket price if you’d like a box lunch on the cruise.)

ALF has reserved a block of rooms at the Comfort Inn at 1190 Lafayette Road (Route 1) in Portsmouth, which is about 10 minutes away from the Portsmouth Elks Lodge and approximately the same distance from the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company. Call (603) 433-3338 to make a reservation and let them know you’re attending the American Lighthouse Foundation events. The special rate for the rooms is $95.96, plus tax. The Comfort Inn includes a free continental breakfast, free coffee, indoor heated pool, free high speed internet, and an exercise room.
