Harrison said,
“The photograph came into our possession a number of years ago. We scanned
the image for our files and then placed the original in storage for
safekeeping. This was long before Burnt Island Lighthouse was restored as a
living history museum.”
The original
matted photo, estimated to be taken between the to the late 1800’s or early
1900’s shows the light-station before many of the large trees had grown up
and changed the landscape.
Harrison said he
had long ago forgotten about the photograph and recently came across it
while searching for another item in the archives of the American Lighthouse
Foundation. “At first I was going to put in on display in our Museum of
Lighthouse History in Wells. However, when I learned that Elaine Jones would
be attending the lighthouse conference in Rockland, and since we already had
a scanned image of it, I thought it would be an appropriate time and place
to donate the original to Elaine for the Burnt Island Lighthouse.”
Elaine said the
photograph was of historical significance because it shows a lighthouse
keeper standing near the tower and she hopes to identify the keeper through
computer enlargements.
