Dear Friends,
It is a pleasure to
send my greetings as you celebrate National Lighthouse Day and the reopening
of the newly expanded Museum of Lighthouse History, a true Maine landmark.
As stately treasures
that dot our coastline, lighthouses are Maine’s precious gems. Symbolic of
our seafaring history, they serve to remind us of our state’s fishing
origins as well as the profound natural beauty of our rocky coast.
As you know, I have
always supported the preservation of these historic landmarks. It was
abundantly clear to me that there was a need to preserve Maine’s historic
lighthouses, which is why I introduced the “Maine Lights Program”
legislation in 1995, giving an extraordinary opportunity to preserve these
living symbols of our maritime heritage. I look forward to extending my
continued support to Tim Harrison, Bob Trapani, Ken Black and the many
dedicated American Lighthouse Foundation members in efforts to secure
additional funding to assist in future lighthouse restorations.
The Museum of
Lighthouse History will preserve the legacy of Maine’s proud heritage. I am
confident that your efforts in this restoration will perpetuate the museum
for future generations to enjoy. Thank you for the opportunity to join in
the celebration of this wonderful day.
