The owners of two mid-coast based schooners have stepped
forward to help the nonprofit American Lighthouse Foundation in its
efforts to save eleven Maine lighthouses and their history.
The owners of the schooner J & E Riggin, based out
of Rockland, and the schooner Timberwind, based out of Rockport
will donate a portion of all their September bookings to the Wells based
lighthouse preservation organization.

Sails, said she got the idea after reading a newspaper story about how many
of Maine’s historic lighthouses are in grave danger. She immediately
contacted the owners of each vessel and presented the fundraising plan and
they both immediately loved the idea.
Tim Harrison, president of the American Lighthouse Foundation said, “I was
delighted when Elizabeth contacted me with the idea.” Harrison went on to
say, “We hope that more firms will follow the lead that the owners of these
vessels have taken to help save Maine’s lighthouses and the history
associated with them.”
To help with the fundraising, the owners of the schooners have mailed out a
promotion to 300 sailing clubs in the United States and other interested
people. The invite to come sailing with them on the magnificent coast of
Maine this September will help raise money for the lighthouse preservation
efforts of the American Lighthouse Foundation.
Henkel said the vessels offer 3, 4, or 6-day adventure sails and private
charters and regardless of the sail time, a portion of all bookings in |

September will go to the lighthouse group. She also
indicated because of the short notice of this year’s fundraising
assistance, she hopes they will be able to make this an annual
fundraiser for the American Lighthouse Foundation, which would allow
more time to promote it.
Bob Trapani, Jr., Executive Director of the American
Lighthouse Foundation said, “This is an excellent opportunity for people
to have a great old-fashioned and rugged experience sailing the Maine
coast while helping to save Maine’s lighthouses and their history.”

Henkel couldn’t agree more saying, “Schooners and lighthouses – what could
be a more perfect match. After all, the schooners have been saved, now
they're going to help save the lighthouses!”
