Extraordinary Volunteers:

The Heart & Soul of ALF’s Lighthouse Preservation Mission

By Bob Trapani, Jr.

If you have served in the lighthouse preservation movement for any length of time, chances are you know all too well the familiar refrain of being under staffed when it comes to volunteers, under-funded with monies for American Lighthouse Foundation Logo

preservation and education projects – and of course, overburdened with more than one person’s share of responsibilities.

Yet for all these challenges to our labor of love, we firmly resist the notion of ever ‘throwing in the towel.’ Instead, lighthouse preservation’s ‘keepers of the light’ push ever forward with an uncommon fervor and dedication for the mission at hand.

Extraordinary volunteers are the heart & soul of the American Lighthouse Foundation’s success. These individuals, people just like you, exemplify community dedication and generosity time and again, and show why volunteers are without question a ‘shining light’ in everything we do.

To these special individuals who blend their unique talents and passions to form a winning team of preservationists for ALF’s lighthouse projects, its

ALF volunteers from all twelve chapters,

difference in the world

all about ‘sending out the light’ – both here in the present and the horizons of tomorrow.

The unparalleled lighthouse restoration success that ALF has realized since 1994 is glowing testimony to the quality of our organization’s volunteers, who in my personal opinion; are quite simply the finest team of preservationists in the nation.

Thanks to such volunteer dedication, ALF has been able to invest over

$2 million dollars in lighthouse restoration over the last decade, and averages over 25,000 volunteer hours annually at ALF projects throughout New England.

As executive director of the American Lighthouse Foundation, it is an honor to serve alongside our many dedicated and talented ‘keepers.’

I believe I can speak on behalf of ALF’s volunteers when I say that what they do for lighthouse preservation is not about personal glory; rather their reward is found in the satisfaction that future generations will know that someone came before them and cared enough to save America’s lighthouses at a time when such action was needed most.

Of course our work is hardly done when it comes to this goal, but everyone should know that as volunteers for the American Lighthouse Foundation, your dedication and proud achievements matter big-time and are sincerely appreciated by our organization.

The future to come – people who you will never meet, are the true benefactors of your present day leadership, sacrifices and selfless acts of community service in the lighthouse preservation movement; for your volunteer efforts today are nothing short of a gift in the making for posterity.

Thank you and keep the lights shining!

Speaking of superb volunteers…

ALF Volunteers Honored during the 2008 Lighthouse Gala & Volunteer Awards Dinner

On November 22, 2008, ALF had the honor of recognizing some of its most dedicated volunteers during the organization’s 3rd annual volunteer awards dinner, which was held this year at the Hyatt Regency Newport in Newport, Rhode Island.

In all, 19 volunteers from ten chapters were honored during the 2008

2008 "Len Hadley Volunteer Award" honorees

awards dinner, with each individual having their own unique story laced with proud examples of dedication and admirable accomplishments, which their chapter presidents happily conveyed to the audience.

The volunteers were presented with the organization’s “Len Hadley Volunteerism Award,” as well as a granite etching of their lighthouse project, with their name proudly gracing the memento.

Irma Streeter, an ALF volunteer award winner from Avery Point Lighthouse Society, eloquently summed up the feelings of many the honorees by noting, “Each of us gives of ourselves as we can and many times we find ourselves wishing we could do more, but our true rewards come from the successes of the lighthouse projects and the people we would have never met otherwise.”
